A Guide for Survivors of Domestic Violence: 8 Steps to Living the Life You Want

Surviving domestic violence is a profound journey, and reclaiming your life afterward can feel overwhelming. Here are some helpful tips that I used to create the life of my dreams. This blog post will show you small intentional steps can lead to significant change. Here are eight tips that have helped me in my healing journey and I hope they inspire you to build the life you want. Written with love from a survivor.

  1. Establish Routines: Creating a daily routine is essential for grounding yourself. Develop routines for both your work and personal life. This structure can provide a sense of normalcy and stability, which is crucial when everything feels uncertain.

  1. Find an Accountability Partner: On tough days, when the urge to give up creeps in, having someone to lean on can make all the difference. Choose an accountability partner who understands your journey and can provide encouragement when those intrusive thoughts arise.

  1. Read Positive Literature: Explore self-help literature that resonates with you and offers practical advice for transformation. I recommend The Four Agreements.

  1. Invest in Yourself Self-Care, Both Physically and Mentally: Consistency is key; small daily actions accumulate over time to create lasting change.

  1. Have Fun: Don’t forget to enjoy life! Engage in activities that bring you joy and elevate your heart rate. Whether it’s dancing, hiking, or painting, find what makes you happy and make time for it.

  1. Share Your Journey: Opening up about your experiences can create a supportive network. Sharing your story fosters connection and understanding, helping you feel less isolated in your journey. Building a support system can be crucial for your success.

  1. Track Your Progress: Taking photos of your progress can be a powerful tool, especially if you struggle with body image documenting your journey helps provide a tangible reminder of how far you’ve come.

  1. Be Patient with Yourself: Healing is not linear. There will be ups and downs. Celebrate your progress, no matter how small. Practice self-compassion. You are worthy of the life you desire. Each step you take is a testament to your resilience. Take pride in your journey.
